Xiphia stared out the window as she got up to stretch. Dinner, a solitary dinner, had been long ago in the dining hall. Why was she always hungry by 9:30 at night. She'd pick up her box lunch and styrofoam cup of tea and piece of fruit tomorrow and eat it on the bus. She had to eat it on the bus because the past few mornings it had been too cold to wait at the cross roads without hat or mittens. "Brrrr....." thought Xiphia.
Outside the window it was snowing. It was not just letting a few little teasers of flurries come down. It was snowing early season, fat, white flakes like instant mashed potatoes. No wonder it was cold in the room. The stupid camp maintenance people had not yet turned on the heat. Xiphia uttered an expletive that was not worth deleting.
Just then she heard the familiar clunks and whirrs of a radiator finally cranking out forced hot air gas heat or maybe it was steam heat. Xiphia cheered inwardly and then...the lights went out. Whoever had lit the pilot light or filled the oilburner had reset the stupid timer down by the circuite breakers, and Xiphia had no flashlight for her trip to the basement.
Xiphia pocked her room keys, picked up the utility box to pick those pesky locks nad headed downstairs to do battle with the powers of darkness. How dare they turn off her lights!
